Litha is a seasonal pagan holiday celebrating the Summer Solstice, with traditions inspired by the Midsummer festivals and lore of cultures throughout history. Above all else, Litha centers upon solar energy—it is a day rich with reverence for the Sun, the star that warms our Earth. One of the eight neo-pagan sabbats, Litha calls on our appreciation and gratitude for the abundance and plentiful harvest we reap by the light of our Sun, from hearty crops to levity and joy. Where does Litha fall on the Wheel of the Year? The Wheel of the Year includes four Quarter Days and four Cross-Quarter Days, including the winter and summer solstices, vernal and autumnal equinoxes, and four midpoints bisecting each of these quarters. The dates of these eight points derive most directly from the pre-Christian Celtic calendar, a solar-lunar ritual calendar dating from the second century AD that divided the year into eight roughly-equivalent seasonal sections.
