Ostara is a modern pagan celebration surrounding the Vernal (Spring) Equinox, inspired by spring equinox festivals and traditions of cultures throughout history. The name Ostara was coined by Gerald Gardner in the mid-20th century; the equinox itself, however, is an occurrence that has been observed in various ways for thousands of years all over the planet. This equinox marks the point at which the Sun is directly over the equator and the planet's northern hemisphere begins to tilt further toward the Sun, tipping it into Spring. Ostara is the time for new beginnings, throwing open our doors and windows, cleansing our spaces, and dreaming of new possibilities for the lighter half of the year. Where does Ostara fall on the Wheel of the Year? The Wheel of the Year includes four Quarter Days and four Cross-Quarter Days, including the winter and summer solstices, vernal and autumnal equinoxes, and four midpoints bisecting each of these quarters. The dates of these eight points derive most directly from the pre-Christian Celtic calendar, a solar-lunar ritual calendar dating from the second century AD that divided the year into eight roughly-equivalent seasonal sections.
