About our Kakuobi & Large Belts lineup The Iaido style belts are used by Iaido practitioners but are also popular among Aikido practitioners who prefer a thin and wide belt under the Hakama. This allows to stabilize the hips and is more comfortable for Ukemi practice. Depending on the morphology, this type of belt can as well help to tie the Hakama more firmly. The Kakuobi is a traditional Japanese belt worn by males with a Kimono or Yukata, or in some martial arts under the Hakama (Mainly Iaido and Kyudo, Aikido to a lesser extent). Obi is a generic term meaning "belt", kaku means "angle" or "squere" and in the case of "kakuobi" it refers to the shape of the belt. The Kakuobi is usually made of cotton or silk. The silk kakuobi are significantly thinner than models made of cotton and more comfortable to wear for martial arts, including Aikido because of the ubiquity of Ukemi. There are many variations of patterns, always in the same style. Pattern and the way it is tied are element of fashion and elegance that are very important in Japanese traditional clothing.
