Open-frame coils cut the shell away between the windings, leaving spokes and open space instead of a solid face. The point is weight and water: an open build swings lighter at the same size and lets water pass through instead of pushing it, which matters by hour four of a field day and on every underwater sweep. The trade is that stiff grass and stubble can catch and knock the exposed spokes. Most large aftermarket coils, and most big pulse induction gold coils, are open builds for exactly these reasons.
