About

Chain lube is the cheapest insurance your drivetrain will ever get. This range covers road, off-road and all-weather riding with Motul, Putoline and Oxford formulas, from PTFE dry films to ceramic wax. Pick a lube matched to your chain type, your climate and how hard you ride to keep your O-ring sealed and running. Chain lube does two jobs: cut metal-on-metal friction and seal water and grit away from your O-ring or X-ring chain so it reaches its rated life. A modern road chain is built to run 20,000km or more when lubed every 500 to 800km, and neglect can halve that. Match the formula to your conditions. Type Best for Re-apply interval Cure time Key trait Dry PTFE Road, dusty trails Every 500km 10 to 15 min Low fling, sheds dust Wet film Cold, wet touring Every 700km 20 min Stays put in rain Ceramic wax Mixed road riding Every 600km 20 to 30 min Hard wax barrier Off-road MX, enduro, mud Each ride 15 min High tack, water resist Dry lubes flash off their carrier solvent in 10 to 15 minutes and leave a thin PTFE film that resists fling at 100km/h-plus and will not collect abrasive grit. Putoline Drytec PTFE and Tech Ceramic Wax sit here. Wet lubes hold a tackier film for cold, high-rainfall riding where wash-off is the enemy, with Oxford Mint Wet and Mint 365 covering that. Motul C2 Road is the all-round street choice, while Motul C3 is built for off-road tack. Apply to a warm chain so the lube wicks into the rollers, spin the wheel through 2 to 3 full rotations, then cure for at least 20 minutes before riding so it grips instead of flinging. Always clean first: re-lubing over old grit grinds your chain. Check tension at the same time, with most chains wanting 25 to 40mm of slack and around 95 percent of premature wear traced to poor lubrication.
