Choosing the right motorcycle coolant Coolant does two jobs at once: it transfers heat away from the engine and protects the metal and seals inside the cooling system from corrosion. The right choice depends on if you want a pre-mixed fluid or a concentrate you dilute yourself. A standard 50/50 mix with distilled water suits most conditions and raises the boiling point above 108C under a 0.9 bar cap, while a 60/40 mix shifts protection toward colder climates near -52C. Always use distilled water, since tap water carries minerals that build deposits over time and reduce heat transfer. Cooling system care Most manufacturers recommend a coolant change roughly every 24 months or 24,000 km, whichever comes first. Fresh coolant holds its corrosion inhibitors at full strength and keeps the operating temperature stable through summer heat above 35C and stop-start traffic. Run a clean 50/50 ratio, never run plain water alone, and check the reservoir level when the engine is cold for an accurate reading. A correctly filled system protects the radiator, water pump and gaskets for the long haul.
