“Gadda” is the traditional Hindi term for a mattress . In earlier times, these gaddas were typically hand-stuffed with cotton or coir and crafted by local artisans. Despite the rise of modern mattresses, these traditional versions remain popular across both rural and urban India. Most of us have owned one at some point in our lives and they have been an integral part of our childhoods. I am talking to all the 90’s kids here… Drawbacks Of The Traditional Gaddas: Traditional cotton-stuffed gaddas have been widely used in many cultures for generations, but they come with several drawbacks, especially when compared to modern alternatives. Here are the main disadvantages: 1. Inadequate Support: Cotton compresses over time, losing its ability to provide adequate support. They lump up and can cause discomfort and poor posture. 2. Cotton Retains Moisture: Cotton tends to absorb and retain moisture from sweat or humidity creating an environment suitable for the growth of moulds and mildews, contributing to poor sleep hygiene. 3. Frequent Fluffing Needed: We all have seen our grandfathers carrying those gaddas to the local gadda walas. Cotton shifts and clumps over time, requiring regular fluffing and repositioning to maintain comfort and shape. 4. Not Very Durable: These gaddas wear out much faster than modern foam or spring mattresses. 5. Not Ergonomically Designed: There was once a common belief that the harder the mattress, the better it was for sleep. However, this is not necessarily true. Traditional gaddas lacked the ability to contour to the body or relieve pressure in key areas such as the hips, shoulders, and lower back. 6.
