Head protection in fastpitch softball is not optional, and the right helmet makes a real difference in both safety and confidence at the plate. Batting Helmets Fastpitch batting helmets must meet NOCSAE standards to be used in sanctioned competition. Most leagues also require a wire face guard for youth players. Batting helmets come in single earflap and dual earflap configurations. Single-earflap helmets are designed so the earflap faces the pitcher when the player is in the right or left-handed batting stance. Dual earflap helmets are used at the youth level and in some league-mandated divisions. Sizing runs from youth through adult and is measured by head circumference in inches. Most helmets in the 6 7/8 to 7 1/2 range cover the adult market, while youth models typically cover 6 3/8 to 6 7/8. Dial-fit adjustment systems inside the helmet allow for a more precise fit and are particularly useful for players whose heads fall between standard sizes. Catcher and Coach Helmets Catcher and coach helmets serve a different purpose than batting helmets. Catcher's helmets must cover the full skull and neck and are paired with a helmet-mounted or separate wire mask. First base and third base coaches in youth leagues often need to wear helmets on the field as well.
