A Subtractive Process, By Hand Every piece in this collection begins as a rough block and ends as a finished form, carved down by a single pair of hands rather than cast or assembled from parts. Nothing is added to the stone during this process, only removed, so what remains is entirely a product of the carver's decisions and the character of that particular block of stone. No Two Pieces Are Identical Because the process is subtractive, no two pieces can ever be identical, even across the same design carved twice. The veining and small inclusions a carver meets partway through shape the final form in ways that cannot be fully planned in advance, which is part of what makes a carved stone sculpture different from anything produced in multiples. Commissions: Figurative and Abstract Figurative and abstract works are both represented here, and custom commissions are welcome for a piece built around your space, your scale and your stone of choice, rather than choosing only from what is already finished and in stock. Many clients start with a photograph or a rough sketch of the feeling they want, and we help translate that into a finished form. A commission usually starts with a conversation about scale, setting and the feeling you want the piece to carry, whether that is a quiet abstract form for a hallway or a figurative work built as a focal point for a larger room. From there we talk through suitable stones, since density, colour and how a particular block takes detail all affect what a design can become in practice. Placement and Care Placement matters as much as the piece itself. Light moves differently across a polished surface than a honed one, and a sculpture set beneath a window will read differently through the day than one lit at night. We are happy to advise on positioning based on photos of your space before a final piece is carved and finished. Care depends on where the piece lives. An indoor sculpture on a polished stone needs little beyond occasional dust
