A rim lock is a surface-mounted lock case fitted to one face of a door. Unlike a mortice lock, which is recessed into the door edge, most of the rim-lock mechanism remains visible when installed. This makes a cast iron rim lock particularly well suited to ledge and brace doors, traditional joinery and period interiors where visible ironmongery forms part of the room’s character.
