What a diya actually has to do A diya has one job and it is harder than it looks. It has to hold a small pool of oil steady, keep a cotton wick fed at the right height, and stay stable at the base while someone lifts it and circles it. Brass does all three, which is why it has outlasted every other material tried for the job.
