About
What to buy on Dhanteras Dhanteras is the one day in the year when the buying is itself the observance. A household buys metal on Dhantrayodashi because the purchase is the rite, not because anything at home needs replacing. So the question people actually ask on this day is not which gift is nicest. It is what counts. What counts, roughly in the order people hold to it: gold first, then silver, then brass, copper and steel. Vessels are the oldest form of it and coins the most convenient one. Idols are bought on the day as well, and the ones bought are Lakshmi, Kubera and the Lakshmi Ganesh pair. Buy it from the shop at the end of your road on the morning itself. It is one of the few purchases where spending more misses the point. Vessels, if you buy them elsewhere, carry one rule worth passing on. Never carry a new vessel into the house empty. Fill it with water, rice or something sweet on the way in. The muhurat is a short evening window, so order before the day Dhanteras falls on trayodashi in the dark fortnight of Kartik, two days ahead of Diwali, which puts
