What is the dhoti function, and at what age is it held? A boy is dressed in a pancha for the first time and the room begins treating him differently. That is the whole of it, and it is more than it sounds. Until that morning he has turned up to family events in shorts or trousers. From that afternoon he is seated with the men, photographed in a silk pancha and an angavastram, and spoken to as somebody who has grown up. The name shifts by language. Telugu families call it the panchala function, panchalu, or pancha kattu. Tamil families say veshti kattu. The spelling wanders once it reaches a search box: dhothi, dothi, doti. If your invitation carries any of those, it is the same afternoon. Age varies more than people expect. Most families hold it somewhere between about seven and the early teens, commonly around eleven, and many set it to fall with or close to the upanayanam so that relatives travelling in make one journey rather than two.
