Loban Burners

What we make is the burner, not the loban Loban is burned morning and evening in a great many houses, for the scent and for the sense of a room being settled. The vessel it burns in is the whole of what we make. Lidded brass burners, roughly three to six inches, built to hold a lit charcoal disc with the resin sitting on top of it. We do not sell loban, we do not sell sambrani, and we do not sell charcoal discs. All of it is cheap and all of it is sold loose by weight at any pooja shop, kirana or agarbatti counter, and a small packet of resin will last months of daily burning. It is worth being plain about, because the pot and the thing burnt in it are usually sold side by side and it is easy to assume one includes the other. Loban in the north and sambrani in the south are the same benzoin resin, which is why the burner answers to so many names: loban dani, dhoop dani, dhoop stand, loban stand, loban holder, sambrani holder, lobandan, dhupdani in Bengali, and dhuni or dhuna for the taller kind. Luban and lobaan are the same word written as it sounds. One object, one purpose, a dozen spellings. There are three ways to burn loban, and they do not want the same burner The traditional method is a charcoal disc, lit at one edge and left until it stops sparking and greys over, set in the base with loose resin sprinkled on as it burns. It gives the strongest smoke and the most control over how long it lasts, it needs a deep base and a lid, and it is what every burner here is built for. Self lighting sambrani cups and dhoop cones are the easier version. You light the cone itself, no charcoal, and stand it in the base. Any of these will take one, though a single cone in a six inch dhuni is a small fire in a large room. The third way is electric, a plate that warms the resin rather than burning it, and it is the one we should be straight about: we do not make one.
