Retirement gifts for men There is a shelf in a great many retired men's houses holding a clock that stopped years ago, a pen set still in its box, and a plaque with the middle initial spelled wrong. Forty years of work, commemorated in things nobody looks at twice. A retirement gift has two jobs and most of them manage only one. It has to mark the career, and it has to still make sense in a house he is about to spend far more time in than he ever has. The second job is the harder one, and it is the one the plaque never does. Why a cast piece, and not a clock Nothing in this selection does anything, and that is the whole point. A retirement gift with a function gets outlived by its function: the clock stops, the pen dries, the engraved crystal ends up behind a photograph. A cast piece in brass or plate has no mechanism to give out and no purpose to go out of date. It sits, it catches the light, and in twenty years it is exactly what it was on the day it was handed over. Brass is solid metal the whole way through and the only material here you can wash. It darkens over a few months, which is oxidation rather than neglect, and lemon and salt brings it back. It is also the heaviest thing we make, and weight is most of why a brass piece reads as serious the moment it leaves your hands. Gold and silver plating is built up in three layers: a resin core, a layer of copper over it, then real gold or silver electroplated on top, and on some pieces both. The copper is there because resin cannot be plated directly, and it is what the precious metal keys onto. That construction is why a plated piece is light enough to shift with one hand, why the detail stays crisp at the sizes a mantelpiece or a study takes, and why water is the one thing that undoes it. It arrives at its best and asks nothing at all of the man receiving it, which matters when you are giving to someone who has never polished an ornament in his life. Keep it dry and it holds.
