Unlike compressor dehumidifiers, desiccant dehumidifiers are specialized units that don't use refrigeration systems, compressors, or coils to condense moisture out of the air. These machines lower the humidity in a space using a process called adsorption. During this process, humid air is drawn into the dehumidifier and passed over a desiccant wheel infused with silica gel. Moisture is adsorbed into the silica gel before leaving the dehumidifier as warm, dry air.
