How Castaic fishes through the year Spring (March–May) — Fish reposition to deeper drop-offs as the lake fills. Finesse is the game: dropshot rigs, light-line Carolina rigs, and wacky-rigged stickbaits in the 15 to 30-foot zone. C3 Baits Prototype Worms and Slim Pros in Neptune Shad, Purple Haze, and Cinnamon are the proven Castaic standards. Post-spawn transition (May–June) — Bass group up after spawning and reaction baits begin earning their place alongside finesse. Jerkbaits, crankbaits, and underspins start to produce as the shad spawn sets up the summer topwater conditions ahead. Summer (July–October) — The best topwater fishing of the year. Bass run open water in wolf packs of five to ten fish, pushing bait into the backs of the coves. First and last two hours of daylight are your windows. Smaller profile lures — MegaBass Karashi, Jackall 007 Riser Bait, C3 Baits Flukenstein — match the one to two-inch shad the fish are keying on. Striper boils run daily at Center Point, the Elderberry buoy line, and Elizabeth Canyon. Lucky Craft Gunfish and Fishus Espetit in white belly are Jim's striper calls. Fall (October–November) — Surface temps drop and feeding windows extend. Topwater remains productive but jerkbaits and swimbaits grow more effective as fish stage ahead of winter. The striper bite can be exceptional through this period. Winter (December–February) — Deep finesse on main lake structure. Dropshot rigs and football jigs in the 20 to 40-foot zone.
