Discovered in Cornwall, Great Britain, in 1791, titanium was named after the Titans of Greek mythology, symbolizing its formidable strength. Found in mineral deposits like rutile and ilmenite, titanium is renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance and unparalleled strength-to-density ratio, the highest of any metallic element. During the 1950s and 1960s, titanium's remarkable properties were harnessed by the Soviet Union for military and submarine applications, and it became a staple in military aviation. Aircraft such as the F-100 Super Sabre and Lockheed A-12 and SR-71 relied on titanium for its lightweight strength and durability.
