Irma Stern (1894-1966) was a South African female artist who contributed to the Expressionist movement who painted vibrant, lustrous floral studies and deeply compelling portraits. Irma Stern was way ahead of her time. She was a full-time professional artist when hardly anyone else in South Africa was able to get that right. Stern's art, depicting the indigenous peoples of Swaziland, Mozambique, and South Africa, showcased the spiritual and emotional aspects of her subjects in thick, rich color. Stern’s legacy endures and she continues to outperform all other South African artists.
