Direct operated 3-way solenoid valves for universal applications, can usually also be used for vacuum. Indirect operated 3-way valves (like most 3-way pneumatic solenoid valves) cannot be used for vacuum, unless they use an external pressure supply for the pilot operation. The drawing below shows how a standard normally closed 3-way solenoid valve can be used in a vacuum application, where Vac. stands for vacuum, Atm. for atmosphere and App. for application (eg. suction cup).
