East Indian rosewood is the whole story on the D-28. It is denser than the mahogany on a D-18, so under the same solid spruce top and the same forward-shifted Golden Era scalloped bracing it stores more energy and gives it back as sustain and a wide band of overtones. That is the sound most people mean when they say a Martin: deep low end, ringing highs, and enough decay to fill the space behind a vocal.
