Bottle Traps Buying Guide A bottle trap is a compact, cylindrical trap that sits under a basin and connects the basin waste to the wall pipe. It is designed to be seen, so it suits wall hung, pedestal and above-counter basins where the pipework is exposed. This collection holds bottle traps from Meir, Nero, Phoenix, Caroma, ADP and Turner Hastings in 32mm and 40mm sizes and a wide range of finishes. What does a bottle trap do? It holds a small pool of water that forms a seal, stopping sewer gas, smells and insects coming back up through the basin. Each time the basin drains, fresh water replaces the old, so the seal renews itself. The trap also catches debris and small items that slip past the waste. Bottle trap or P-trap: which do I need? Choose a bottle trap when the pipework will be on show and the outlet goes into the wall. Choose a P-trap when the plumbing is hidden inside a vanity cabinet. An S-trap is used where the pipe leaves through the floor. Bottle traps are not suited to kitchen sinks, where grease and higher flow call for a P-trap. Do I need a 32mm or 40mm bottle trap? Match it to the basin waste and the wall pipe. The Meir round bottle traps are made for a 32mm basin waste. The Nero, Phoenix and Caroma bottle traps are 40mm. If your waste is 32mm and your wall pipe is 40mm, check the product for the adaptor or connection it supports, and ask your plumber to confirm before ordering. Are bottle traps legal in Australia? Yes, when they are WaterMark certified and installed by a licensed plumber. Every fixture connected to a drain needs a trap with a water seal, and a certified bottle trap provides one. The Caroma 40mm bottle trap is WaterMark approved, meets AS 1589 and has an inspection opening for clearing. Which finish should I choose? Choose the same finish as the basin mixer and waste, because the trap is in plain view. The range covers chrome, polished chrome, brushed nickel, brushed brass, brushed gold, brushed bronze, matte black, gun metal, cham
