About

Freestanding Vanities Buying Guide A freestanding vanity is a bathroom cabinet that stands on the floor, on legs or on a kickboard, instead of hanging from the wall. This collection includes floor standing vanities from Timberline, ADP, Marquis and Ingrain, from compact 400mm powder room units to wide ensuite vanities. They suit renovations where the wall cannot easily take a wall hung unit, and bathrooms with a classic or furniture-style look. What is the difference between a freestanding and a wall hung vanity? A freestanding vanity takes its weight through the floor, while a wall hung vanity is carried by the wall framing. A freestanding unit usually gives more storage, because the cabinet runs down to the floor or close to it. A wall hung unit shows more floor, which makes a small room feel larger and makes mopping easier. Vanities on legs, such as the Timberline Nevada Classic on legs and the Marquis Shore, sit between the two, with an open base and furniture-style legs. Does a freestanding vanity need to be fixed to the wall? Usually, yes. Even though the floor carries the weight, most makers require the cabinet to be secured to the wall to stop it tipping. ADP's installation instructions for the Harper floor mount vanity require screws or bolts through the back of the cabinet at the top and bottom, into at least two studs. Fix into studs, noggins or masonry anchors, never into plasterboard or tile adhesive alone. What size freestanding vanity do I need? Measure the wall and allow clearance for the door, the toilet and the shower entry. Freestanding vanities run from about 400mm for a powder room, such as the Ingrain Round Fluted vanity, to 1800mm and wider for an ensuite. A single basin suits widths up to about 1200mm. Two basins start to work comfortably at about 1500mm. What tops and basins are available? The vanities here come with a range of tops. Timberline offers SilkSurface tops with an above counter or under counter basin, ceramic tops with a moulded
