LED Mirrors Buying Guide An LED mirror has lighting built into the glass, so the light, the switch and often a demister come in one wall-hung unit. This collection includes lit mirrors from Ingrain, Otti, Radiant, Remer and Thermogroup, plus Timberline mirrors that take an optional lighting kit. They suit ensuites and main bathrooms where you want even light at the basin for shaving, skincare or make-up. How does an LED mirror work? LED strips sit along the back edges of the mirror and shine through or around the glass, with diffusers that spread the light evenly. You control them with a touch sensor, a motion sensor or a wall switch, depending on the model. Many models also have a demister, a thin heating pad on the back that keeps the glass clear after a shower. On the Ingrain range the demister heats fully in 3 to 5 minutes and switches off after 60 minutes. What is the difference between frontlit and backlit? A frontlit mirror sends light towards your face, which reduces shadows under the brow, nose and chin and suits grooming. A backlit mirror lights the wall behind the glass, giving a soft glow that suits mood lighting. Mirrors with both give the most balanced result. The Ingrain range comes in all three types across round, arch, pill and rectangle shapes, in frameless, matte black, brushed nickel and burnt brushed gold versions. An LED mirror lights the basin area only, so you still need a ceiling light. Do LED mirrors need an electrician? Hardwired mirrors do. The Ingrain, Radiant and Thermogroup lit mirrors are hardwired, and must be earthed, installed and tested by a licensed electrician. Plan the supply point before the wall is tiled. The Otti mirrors are plug-in, with some sizes also able to be hardwired, so they need a power point within reach and away from water. All the lit ranges here are rated IP44 for use near a basin. What colour light should a bathroom mirror have? Lower Kelvin numbers give warmer light and higher numbers give cooler, whiter ligh
