Low Mercury Fish

About
Some fish naturally contain less mercury than others, making them safer choices for everyone, especially families with young children and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This collection highlights species that are generally recognised as low or very low in mercury, so you can enjoy seafood with confidence. From everyday staples like cod, haddock and pollock to nutrient-dense sardines, salmon, and herring, these fish are all delicious, versatile, and safe. Because they are smaller, short-lived species, they don’t build up mercury in the way that larger predatory fish such as swordfish, shark, or big tuna do. Please note: Mercury levels can vary by species, size, and origin. Guidance is based on UK Food Standards Agency advice. Very Low = typically <0.05 mg/kg mercury (safe for unlimited weekly consumption, even in pregnancy). Low = typically 0.05–0.12 mg/kg (still safe and well within FSA limits).
