Aeroponics suspends bare roots in air and mists them with oxygenated nutrient solution. There is no medium at all, which means the root zone has effectively unlimited oxygen – and oxygen at the root is the ceiling on how fast a plant can grow. Why it is faster In soil or coco, roots compete for air with water held in the medium. In aeroponics that constraint disappears. Cuttings root several days sooner than in a plug, and vegetative growth is visibly quicker. It is the fastest propagation method available and the reason commercial nurseries use it. What it is really used for Propagation. This is where aeroponics earns its keep – rooting cuttings in a week rather than a fortnight. See propagators . Mother plants. Fast, healthy growth on plants you take cuttings from repeatedly. Full-cycle growing. Possible, and very productive, but demanding – see below. The honest trade-off There is no buffer. In coco, if the pump fails you have a day before anything serious happens. In aeroponics, bare roots dry out in hours . A blocked misting nozzle, a power cut or a pump failure while you are at work will cost you the crop. That is the whole risk profile, and it is why aeroponics suits propagation – short runs, checked daily – more than it suits a twelve-week flower. Running one properly Clean the nozzles. Blockage is the primary failure mode. Filter the solution and strip the nozzles between runs. Keep the reservoir cool. Under 22°C, or root pathogens take hold fast in a system with nothing to slow them down. Weak solution. Uptake is so efficient that normal-strength feed will burn. Run lower EC than you would in coco. Consider a backup. A battery air pump or a UPS on the water pump is cheap insurance.
