Air pumps and air stones push oxygen into your nutrient solution. In DWC the roots are permanently submerged, so this is not an accessory – it is life support. In any recirculating system, aeration keeps the tank from going stagnant and holds root pathogens back. Why dissolved oxygen matters Roots respire. Without oxygen at the root surface they cannot take up nutrient, and within a day or two anaerobic conditions let pythium take hold – brown, slimy roots and a plant that wilts in full health. Almost every DWC failure traces back to dissolved oxygen, usually because the reservoir got warm. Warm water holds less oxygen, which is why tank temperature and aeration are the same problem. Sizing the pump Reservoir Airflow Stones Up to 50L 4-8 L/min 1 disc or small bar 50-100L 8-12 L/min 1 large disc or 2 bars 100-200L 12-20 L/min 2 discs or long bars 200L+ 20 L/min+ Multiple, spaced evenly More outlets is generally better than one big stone – spreading the bubbles avoids dead zones in the corners of a tank. Stone types Disc stones – compact, broad spread, the default for buckets. Bar stones – a linear bubble curtain for long tanks and troughs. Ceramic and nano – finer pores make smaller bubbles, which dissolve more oxygen but need a stronger pump to drive them. Practical notes Fit a non-return valve if the pump sits below the water line, or a power cut siphons your reservoir onto the floor. Put the pump on something soft. Most air pump noise is vibration through the surface it sits on, not the motor. Stones clog. Rinse them between runs; replace them when output drops.
