Children's feet are not simply smaller versions of adult feet. The pediatric foot is actively developing throughout childhood and early adolescence, with the arch typically not fully formed until around age 6 and skeletal development not complete until the mid-to-late teens. This developmental context changes what insoles are appropriate for children and why. In most healthy children, the arch develops naturally with time and activity, and insoles aren't necessary. For children with specific structural issues, gait abnormalities, or foot pain, a well-fitted insole can provide support during the developmental period, reduce pain from existing conditions, and in some cases help guide proper arch development. The benefits of children's insoles Support for developing flat feet Flat feet are extremely common in young children and are normal in those under three years old. As the foot develops, most children develop a visible arch by school age. For children who remain flat-footed past age 6, or whose flat feet cause pain, fatigue, or gait abnormality, a supportive insole can reduce discomfort while the foot continues to develop. Unlike adult flat foot where the arch is structurally set, children's flat feet are still in flux, and consistent support during the developmental years may help encourage arch development over time. Pain relief during active growth periods Children and adolescents going through growth spurts experience rapid bone elongation that can temporarily outpace the flexibility of surrounding soft tissue. This can manifest as heel pain from traction on the growth plate at the heel (Sever's disease), arch pain from plantar fascia strain, and general foot fatigue that adults don't experience at the same activity levels. Cushioned, supportive insoles reduce the mechanical stress on the foot during these high-demand growth periods. Appropriate sizing for children's footwear Children's insoles are available in the smaller size ranges that children's shoes requ
