About

Think of these bottles as the rum world's answer to fine whiskey or cognac. Distilled mostly from molasses, the spirit spends years in oak, often used bourbon barrels, where tropical heat and humidity speed up maturation and build deep, rich flavor. Read more Style depends heavily on origin and method. Ron Zacapa from Guatemala and Santa Teresa from Venezuela use a solera system that blends rums of different ages. El Dorado brings the dark, rich Demerara character of Guyana, Appleton Estate shows off Jamaica's bold, fruity style, and Ron Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is known for its round, sweet profile. Old Monk, a vanilla-forward Indian rum, and Parce from Colombia add range. Age statements on rum are not regulated the same way in every country, and a number on a solera rum may reflect the oldest rum in the blend rather than the average. Taste and producer reputation are better guides than the number alone. Pour aged rum neat or with a single large ice cube to appreciate it. For cocktails, a Rum Old Fashioned (rum, a little sugar, bitters and an orange peel) highlights the barrel character, and a classic Mai Tai depends on a flavorful aged Jamaican rum.
