Cane is the quiet workhorse of a well-appointed house. Woven from the outer skin of the rattan palm, it has framed chair backs since Louis XV, cooled Anglo-Indian bedrooms, and lightened every good sunroom since. We love it because it does two things at once: it reads as texture from across a room and as air up close, so a caned bed or a pair of cane-back chairs never feels heavy, even in a formal house.
