About

A ginger jar was never really for ginger. The shape left the Chinese kilns as a storage vessel for salt, oil and spice, travelled to Europe in the seventeenth century packed as ballast in the tea ships, and stayed because a room is simply better with one in it. We have sold them since 2001 — hand-painted Canton blue and white, the double happiness character, celadon and apple green, temple jars with lion lids, and the modern Koa glazes for a house that wants the silhouette without the chinoiserie. Buy one for a mantel. Buy three in graduating heights for a console, which is how they are meant to be seen.
