About
Wood Waxes for Furniture, Joinery and Woodworking Projects Wood wax is a versatile finishing and maintenance product used to protect timber while enhancing its natural colour, grain and texture. Depending on the formulation, wax can be applied as a standalone finish or used over compatible oils, stains and other finishes to create a smooth, tactile surface. Woodworking waxes are commonly used on furniture, cabinets, turned pieces, decorative objects and interior timberwork where a natural-looking finish is desired. Different types of woodworking wax are suited to different applications. Traditional paste and finishing waxes are generally easy to spread and buff, while harder wax formulations can provide a more durable surface for frequently handled items. Some waxes are clear and designed to preserve the existing appearance of the timber, while coloured or tinted waxes can subtly alter the tone, highlight grain or complement an existing finish. Specialist waxes may also be formulated for particular restoration, polishing or maintenance tasks. For the best result, timber should normally be clean, dry and suitably prepared before waxing. Apply a thin, even coat with a clean cloth, suitable applicator or fine abrasive pad, following the manufacturer's directions and working with the grain where practical. Allow the wax to cure or haze for the specified period before buffing it with a clean cloth or polishing brush. Several thin applications will often produce a more even result than one excessively heavy coat. FAQs What is wood wax used for? Wood wax is used to protect, enhance and maintain timber surfaces.
