Plates are available in 3–6 mm steel and 6–8 mm aluminium depending on the level of protection required. Steel vs. Aluminium Skid Plates Steel skid plates are heavier but offer higher impact resistance and are more likely to deform around a strike rather than crack — making them the preferred choice for serious rock crawling and remote bush driving. Aluminium skid plates are significantly lighter, which benefits payload and fuel efficiency, and are well suited to high-speed outback tracks where the primary risk is gravel strike rather than sharp rock impact. Both materials are powder coated or anodised to resist corrosion. Building a Complete Underbody Protection System Effective underbody protection typically requires multiple plates covering the front, mid, and rear sections of the vehicle. A sump plate alone will not protect the fuel tank or diff in severe terrain. Combine bash plates with front-end protection from a nudge bar , and add a recovery winch for self-recovery capability in remote locations.
