Sulfates are chemical foaming agents that, when combined with water, remove dirt and oil from your skin and hair. Conventional skincare manufacturers love sulfates because they are cheap and they get the job done. Sulfates can be quite harsh and stripping, leaving your skin tight and dry. During manufacturing, sulfates can also be cross-contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane, a trace ingredient linked to health issues in humans and wildlife. Fortunately, there are plant-based alternatives that are just as effective, yet much gentler on your skin and the environment.
