The babydoll has come a long way since its early days as wartime nightwear. First introduced in the 1940s by American designer Sylvia Pedlar, the style was created out of necessity, responding to fabric shortages with shorter, simpler nightgowns. It wasn't until the release of the 1956 film Baby Doll , directed by Elia Kazan and starring Carroll Baker, that the term baby doll entered the mainstream. Since then, the style has become synonymous with flirtation, femininity and freedom—an enduring symbol of retro glamour.
