Malbec came from Bordeaux originally, a blending grape that struggled in France's damp climate. Argentina changed that. Planted in Mendoza's high-altitude vineyards, at the foot of the Andes, it turned into a completely different wine: bolder, deeper in color, with softer tannins than it ever had back home. Mendoza alone accounts for roughly 80% of Argentina's wine production, and the reason comes down to geography: intense sun during the day, cold nights from the altitude, and Andean snowmelt for water. That swing in temperature is what gives Argentine Malbec its concentration without losing freshness, something warmer, flatter regions can't replicate.
