Akkeshi is one of Japan's most exciting new whisky distilleries, located in the remote town of Akkeshi on the eastern coast of Hokkaido — a location chosen specifically for its cool, foggy climate that resembles the Scottish Isles. Founded in 2013 and producing whisky since 2016, Akkeshi uses 100% malted barley including heavily peated malt, imported from Scotland, and ages its whisky in a variety of cask types. The distillery releases limited expressions each year tied to the Japanese 24 solar terms — the Keichitsu (awakening of insects), Kisaragi, and Sarorunkamuy series among the most sought-after. Akkeshi whisky is rapidly gaining international recognition as among Japan's finest new distilleries.
