Hard Yakka is an Australian brand that was founded in 1935. Yes, that is how far back the brand goes. It was initially founded as D. K Laidlaw & Sons but later changed their name to Yakka. Yakka was derived from an aboriginal word that meant work. The word ‘Yakka’ has since then entered the Australian vocabulary, and everyone in Australia is now aware of it. Hard Yakka is one of the leading suppliers of workwear in the southern hemisphere. It provides its clients a wide range of workwear to choose from for various work settings. In 2007, the company was acquired by Pacific Brands and later by Wesfarmers in 2014. Hard Yakka has been in the limelight for being the outfitter for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games of 2006 and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games of 2018. Timeline 1930s – 50s: A small clothing company was created by David K. Laidlaw in Brunswick, Victoria. The company was named Yakka, and it later narrowed down its focus to workwear, bringing the name Hard Yakka into existence. Hard Yakka became synonymous with durability, quality and toughness. It opened a new manufacturing plant in Sunbury to meet up with the high demands of the customers. Hard Yakka became the dominant workwear brand in Australia and the company expands owing to the growing demand. A new manufacturing plant was started in Brunswick. 1960s-80s: Further growth with increased demand for the products. A new manufacturing plant was created in Broadmeadows and it became the new headquarter of the company. Railway commercial was launched, which made Hard Yakka an Aussie icon. The Hard Yakka chant became an instant hit.
