Having a clean mountain bike disc brake rotor is key to maintain stopping power, and an old worn out MTB rotor can also be a dangerous issue waiting to happen. If you think you need more brake power you can always upgrade to a larger rotor for the front or front and rear of your mountain bike. It's common to go up in 20mm increments.
