Hydroponics allows food production in spaces where conventional gardening isn't possible — apartments, balconies, indoor rooms and limited-yard suburban properties. Hydroponics — growing plants in a nutrient-rich water solution without soil — has moved from specialist commercial agriculture into Australian home growing over the past decade. The appeal is practical: faster plant growth than soil cultivation, year-round indoor production independent of outdoor conditions, significantly lower water use than conventional gardening and the ability to grow food in a high-rise apartment. Complete hydroponic starter kits provide the clearest starting point for beginners. A typical kit includes a reservoir, a growing platform, net pots, a pump or passive wicking system, growing media and a starter nutrient solution. Set up in a bright indoor position or under a grow light, a basic kit produces usable herbs, lettuce and leafy greens within 3-4 weeks of planting seeds. Grow lights are the most significant component investment for indoor hydroponic growing. Full-spectrum LED grow lights have replaced fluorescent and HID systems as the standard for home growers — they produce less heat, use significantly less electricity and provide a more complete light spectrum. The intensity and coverage area of a grow light determines what and how much you can grow. For herbs and leafy greens, lower-intensity LEDs are sufficient; fruiting plants like tomatoes and capsicum require more intense lighting. Nutrient solutions provide all the minerals and trace elements that plants normally extract from soil. Two-part or three-part nutrient systems allow adjustment of the nutrient mix for different growth stages (seedling, vegetative, flowering). pH management of the nutrient solution is essential — most plants prefer a pH of 5.5-6.5 in hydropo
