About

Terroir & Winemaking Philosophy Located near the Gironde estuary, Château d'Issan’s 59-hectare vineyard benefits from deep gravel and clay soils that provide natural heat retention and moisture control during dry growing seasons. Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot Balance: The core vineyard is planted with approximately 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. In recent vintages, small plots of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc have also been incorporated to add color, spice, and structural complexity. Estate Isolation: The historical core of the vineyard ( Clos d'Issan ) is surrounded by a stone wall dating back to the 17th century. Grapes from this parcel consistently form the backbone of the Grand Vin. Flavor Profile: Typical releases exhibit layered notes of black currant, violet perfume, cedar, tobacco leaf, and subtle crushed stone, supported by fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity. Labels Featured in Our Collection Château d'Issan (Grand Vin): The estate’s flagship Third Growth release. Aged in approximately 50% new French oak for 16 to 18 months, this wine is crafted for cellaring and typically matures gracefully over 10 to 25+ years. Blason d'Issan: The official second wine of the estate, introduced in 1995. Sourced from younger vines, it offers a softer, fruit-forward expression designed for earlier drinking within 3 to 10 years of harvest. Haut-Médoc de d'Issan: Crafted from plots located just outside the Margaux appellation boundary, offering classic Left Bank character in an accessible, early-drinking format. Key Vintages for Collectors & Cellars Widely acclaimed vintages for Château d'Issan include 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022 —releases noted by wine critics for their aromatic concentration, freshness, and long-term aging potential.
