About
Piedmont’s Charming, Early-Ripening Workhorse Translating literally to "little sweet one"—referring to the high natural sugars present in the ripe grapes before fermentation— Dolcetto produces completely dry, deeply colored red wines packed with juicy black fruit character and an appetizing, dry, almond-like finish. Native to the rolling hills of Northwestern Italy’s Piedmont region, Dolcetto serves as the essential daily red wine for local winemakers while they wait for their tightly wound Nebbiolo and high-acid Barbera barrels to mature. Cultivated primarily on cooler, north-facing slopes or higher-elevation vineyards that are too cold for Nebbiolo to ripen fully, Dolcetto ripens early in the fall. It is celebrated for its deep ruby-purple appearance, low-to-moderate natural acidity, lush berry fruit, and firm fine-grained tannins that make it the ultimate companion for casual, weeknight Italian dining. Flavor Profile & Viticultural Traits Deep Color & Fruit Intensity: Despite its soft, approachable reputation, Dolcetto boasts thick skins that yield intense deep purple and ruby colors. It bursts with aromas of black plum, dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, violet floral top-notes, and a signature hint of bitter cocoa or crushed almond on the finish. Low Acidity & Firm Tannins: Unlike its neighbor Barbera (which is famously high in acid and low in tannin), Dolcetto has lower natural acidity and robust, structural tannins. Fermentation and aging are almost exclusively conducted in stainless steel or concrete tanks rather than oak to preserve its fresh, vibrant fruit core. Key Appellations & Cru Zones Dolcetto d’Alba DOC: The largest and most popular appellation surrounding the town of Alba, overlapping the famous Barolo and Barbaresco zones. Delivers accessible, juicy, black-fruit-driven wines crafted for early drinking (1 to 3 years post-vintage). Dolcetto di Dogliani DOCG / Dogliani DOCG: Broadly recognized as the spiritual home for the variety, lo
