About

Grenache, or as it’s known in Spain, Garnacha, is likely one of the most widely planted > red grape vines in the world and one of the key ingredients in the world’s most popular and expensive wines. Known for its berry flavours and mild notes of white pepper, Grenache is often considered to be as important in the wine world as Cabernet Sauvignon Born in the northern region of Spain , Aragon, the Garnacha grape started to be cultivated and used for both blended and single varietal wines. Due to Aragon’s location close to France’s border, Garnacha travelled to the Languedoc-Roussillon region of Southern France . From there, it eventually got to the Southern Rhone, where it became truly famous. By the way, the French ended up calling the grape Grenache due to the language difference. In the Southern Rhone, the local winemakers were looking for a grape to blend with other famous varieties of the area, something that would add body, fruitiness, and alcohol to the local wines. They found that grape in Garnacha! The grape has a medium-bodied taste, higher alcohol, tropical grapefruit aromas and slight notes of oregano and tobacco. The wines made from Grenache are deceptively light in color and semi-translucent. These days, it can be found as both a single variety and in blends across the globe. From Spain and France, to Australia and the US , the grape has grown world wide. Grenache pairs well with most cuisine such as prime rib, rack of lamb and roasted veggies.
