The line between whether a plant is a "tree" or a "shrub" is sometimes very thin and quite blurry! We use the following criteria to decide which type applies to a certain plant: Trees Reaching over 20' tall at maturity Having a single or multiple trunks, typically more than 4" in diameter Trunks rise significantly above ground level before branching and leaves are present Shrubs Remaining less than 20' tall at maturity Typically having multiple heavy branches or trunks measuring less than 4" in diameter Branching and leaves are present at or slightly above ground level
