You will know you are ready when you can easily catch waves on any mid length, fish or hybrid surfboard and can consistently make the drop on steeper waves and well as being able to consistently maneuver on the face of a wave face. As you get smaller in your board size, the dimensions, shape and volume become more critical as the boards are more responsive and require less foam which requires paddle strength and a good pop up technique.
