As the name suggests, cotton lawn fabric is a type of lawn cloth that is made from 100% cotton. Lawn fabric dates back to the 16th century and whilst it was traditionally made from linen, it’s more commonly made from cotton these days. The term ‘lawn’ derives from the French city Laon where lawn cloth was first produced. This type of fabric is very lightweight and it has a smooth look, like silk. Often, cotton lawn is used as a softer alternative to organza and it has the same semi-transparency as this fine material. Although it’s lightweight, cotton lawn fabric has a tight weave and a fairly high thread count, so it has more structure to it than similar soft fabrics like voile.
