Type I interferons, including IFN‑alpha subtypes, and type II interferon (IFN‑gamma) are important antiviral cytokines that trigger innate immune defenses. They upregulate antiviral genes, enhance antigen presentation and activate NK cells and macrophages to control viral infections.
