Getting set up for EFILive heavy duty Cummins tuning requires a specific combination of hardware, firmware, and licensing — and buying the wrong thing in the wrong order is a frustrating (and expensive) mistake. Step 1 — Choose your EFILive device The AutoCal V3 ($560) is the end-user device — no laptop required, plug-and-flash operation for customers receiving tunes. The FlashScan V3 (from $679.33) is the full tuner/shop device with scan tool capability, data logging, and support for up to 600 VIN licenses. Step 2 — Get the 9-Pin HD to OBD Adapter ($40) Required for all Class 8 trucks, RVs, dump trucks, and marine applications using the J1939 9-pin Deutsch connector. Without this, your EFILive device cannot communicate with the ECM. Step 3 — HD Enable your FlashScan V3 ($400, FlashScan only) This one-time firmware upgrade unlocks heavy duty Cummins ECM support on your FlashScan V3 and includes 2 HD VIN credits to get you started. Skip this and no amount of VIN licenses will help — the device simply won't talk to HD controllers. Step 4 — Purchase HD VIN Licenses ($125 each) One license per vehicle, consumed at first flash.
