A biscuit jointer cuts a curved slot into each piece of timber being joined, into which a compressed wooden biscuit is glued. As the biscuit absorbs moisture from the glue, it swells slightly and locks the joint tight, giving strong alignment across a panel seam without visible screws, nails or dowels showing on the finished surface.
