Acana dog food comes in four ranges, and they're genuinely different foods rather than flavour variations. All of it is dry kibble, made in Canada. The range you pick matters more than the flavour. Which Acana range Classics is the grain-inclusive one: a 50/50 split of animal ingredients and grains, vegetables and fruit, at 27% protein. It's the cheapest way into the brand and the one most dogs do perfectly well on. Heritage is the mainstream grain-free tier, and where most of the lifestage and breed-size recipes sit. That covers puppy, senior, small breed and large breed, plus Light & Fit for dogs carrying weight and Sport & Agility for working and active dogs. Highest Protein is the top tier: Wild Prairie, Grasslands, Pacifica and Ranchlands. More meat, higher protein, higher price. Wild Prairie has 25% Protein and 70% animal ingredients. Singles uses one animal protein per recipe: lamb, pork or duck. That's the range to look at if your dog reacts to chicken, which is the most common culprit we hear about. Who Acana suits Active dogs and dogs who need condition on them. Also dogs with a suspected food sensitivity, because Singles lets you strip the diet back to one protein without moving to a prescription food. It suits people who want to stay with one brand as a dog ages, too. Puppy, adult and senior recipes all sit in the same range, so you're not starting from scratch each time. Grain-free, or Classics? If your dog is doing fine on a decent grain-inclusive food, there's no real reason to switch. Grain-free is not automatically better. It's better for some dogs. Acana Classics is grain-inclusive, cheaper, and a perfectly good food. Start there unless you've a reason not to. Grain-free earns its money when a dog has a diagnosed grain sensitivity, or genuinely does better on higher meat content. Your vet is the right person to confirm the first one.
